The excusable reasons for breaking the fast in Ramadan are nine: they are illness, travel, coercion, hunger, thirst, old age, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and jihad in the way of Allah. These are divided into two categories: the first is a license, as in the fear of increased harm. The second is an absolute allowance, as in the fear of destruction. The considered fear that permits breaking the fast is what is based on a strong assumption from an indication or experience, even if it comes from someone other than the sick person when the illness is the same, or based on the report of a skilled, trustworthy Muslim doctor: that is, one whose condition is unknown and has not shown any corruption or justice. Refer to: Al-Bada'i 2: 97, Al-Fath Al-Qadeer 2: 253, and Rad Al-Muhtar 2: 421.
