Most of the scholars do not see any harm in it, and they have differing opinions; some say it is better to connect it to the day of Eid al-Fitr, while others say it should be distributed throughout the month. The permissibility is supported by what was narrated from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, who said that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he has fasted for a lifetime," as found in Sahih Muslim 2: 822, Sunan al-Nasa'i 2: 164, and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir 4: 135. This is because there is a separation by the day of Eid al-Fitr, so it is not necessary to resemble the People of the Book. As for what was narrated from Abu Hanifa and Abu Yusuf regarding its dislike, it is because it may lead the common people to believe that it is obligatory due to the frequent practice; hence we have heard some say: "On the day of Eid, we have not yet celebrated our holiday or something similar." However, when there is safety from that, there is no harm in it due to the hadith regarding it. Refer to: Hashiyat al-Tahbiyyin 1: 332, al-Bahr al-Ra'iq 2: 278, and Bada'i' al-Sana'i' 2: 78.
