Purity of Alcohol

Question
Is alcohol considered impure?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: "Alcohol" is a matter of dispute; based on the differing opinions of the scholars of the school regarding the impurity of intoxicants other than wine, there are three narrations: the first is that it is impure with a severe impurity, the second is that it is impure with a light impurity, and the third is that it is pure. The distinguished scholar Al-Kawthari, one of the prominent scholars of the school, said that intoxicants other than wine, such as "alcohol," are permissible to use, but it is forbidden to drink them. He mentioned that this is the opinion of Abu Hanifa, may God have mercy on him. Adopting this opinion provides ease and leniency for people, given the widespread use of this important substance in many aspects of life today. There is no doubt that avoiding its use for those who can is preferable, due to the differences among scholars regarding its purity. And God knows best. See: Margin of Fath Bab al-‘Inayah 1: 258, and God knows best.
