Question
Is it permissible for someone who fears missing the funeral prayer to perform tayammum instead of wudu in order to start the prayer?
Answer
I say, and with Allah's success: If someone fears missing the funeral prayer while preoccupied with ablution and washing, it is permissible for him to perform dry ablution (tayammum) and initiate the prayer; because it cannot be performed alone, even if he starts it while in a state of ablution and then becomes ritually impure, and fears that if he goes to perform ablution, he will miss the prayer, it is permissible for him to perform dry ablution; because the fear of missing it remains; because it is a busy day, and something may occur that invalidates his prayer. Likewise, if he starts the funeral prayer with dry ablution and then becomes ritually impure, he is allowed to perform dry ablution to continue. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If you fear that you will miss the funeral prayer while you are not in a state of ablution, then perform dry ablution and pray," reported in Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 2: 497, and its narrators are the narrators of Muslim except for Al-Mughirah, who is accepted as a narrator, as mentioned in I'laa as-Sunan 1: 300, and Nasb ar-Rayah 1: 157. And from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "A funeral was brought to him while he was not in a state of ablution, so he performed dry ablution and then prayed for it," reported by Al-Bayhaqi in Al-Ma'rifah. See: I'laa as-Sunan 1: 301, and Al-Hadiyyah Al-'Ala'iyyah p. 34, and Allah knows best.
