The Great Awakening

Question
What is meant by the Great Awakening?
Answer
It is the legal noon, which is half the time from dawn to sunrise. It begins before the sun sets after it has been vertical in the middle of the sky by half the duration of that day's dawn. We need to know the time of the forenoon; because it is the last time when the intention for fasting Ramadan, a specific vow, or voluntary fasting is permissible. It is a condition for the validity of fasting during this time that there is an intention, and its time is from night until just before the major forenoon. Likewise, we need to know the last time for the forenoon prayer. Therefore, if one intends to fast Ramadan, a specific vow, or voluntary fasting after the forenoon, it is not valid, as stated in the Indian fatwas 1: 195.
