The Guide to the Obligation of Zakat on Vegetables

Question
Is there a reliable hadith from the Prophet (peace be upon him) indicating that zakat is not obligatory on vegetables?
Answer

I say, and with Allah's help: It was narrated from Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “There is no zakat on vegetables” in Al-Mu'jam Al-Awsat 6: 100, and Musnad Al-Bazzar 3: 156. And from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him): “He wrote to the Prophet (peace be upon him) asking him about vegetables - which are legumes - and he said: There is nothing due on them” in Sunan Al-Tirmidhi 3: 30, and he said: “The chain of this hadith is not authentic, and nothing authentic has been reported in this regard from the Prophet (peace be upon him).” These hadiths were accepted by the two companions from the Hanafi school, who said: Vegetables are not subject to zakat, and every fruit that does not last a year without preservation. However, Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him) obligated zakat on them; adhering to the well-known hadiths that mandated zakat in general on everything that comes out of the earth; as narrated by Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), who said (peace be upon him): “In what is watered by rain and springs, or is irrigated by a tenth, the zakat is one-tenth, and what is watered by sprinkling is half a tenth” in Sahih Al-Bukhari 2: 540. And from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) he said: “In what is watered by rain, rivers, and springs, the zakat is one-tenth, and in what is watered by a bucket, it is half a tenth” in Sunan Al-Daraqutni 2: 130. According to him (may Allah have mercy on him), the hadith of the singular narrators regarding the non-zakat on them does not take precedence over the well-known hadith, and the statement of the Imam (may Allah have mercy on him) is the relied-upon opinion among the Hanafis in this matter, and Allah knows best.
