Question
Are intoxicants other than wine considered impure?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: There are three narrations regarding the impurity of intoxicants other than wine. The first is that they are impure with a severe impurity, the second is that they are impure with a light impurity, and the third is that they are pure. The author of Al-Durr Al-Mukhtar said: "And regarding other intoxicating drinks besides wine, there are three narrations: severity, lightness, and purity. In Al-Bahr, the severity is preferred, while in Al-Nahr, the lightness is preferred." And Sheikh Abdul Fattah Abu Ghuddah stated that according to the narration of lightness, what is less than a quarter of the garment or body affected is excused. And the scholar Ahmad Al-Zarqa relied on the narration of purity and issued fatwas based on it, and God knows best.
