The Obligation of Zakat on Women's Jewelry

Question
Is zakat obligatory on women's jewelry made of gold and silver if they possess it for the purpose of adornment only and not for trade?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: Zakat is obligatory on women's jewelry made of gold and silver, and on gold and silver coins, and their ingots, and their ornaments are all equal in the obligation of zakat if they reach the nisab; because gold and silver grow by themselves, so the lack of their growth from their owner is a shortcoming on their part, and they cannot compensate for it by not paying their zakat. This is supported by the Holy Quran in His saying: {And those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend them in the way of Allah, give them tidings of a painful punishment} (Surah At-Tawbah: 34), as there is no distinction made between types in considering it as the condemned hoarding if its due zakat is not paid. The hadiths of the Prophet (peace be upon him) are explicit in the necessity of paying zakat on it; from Amr ibn Shu'aib from his father from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him): "A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with her daughter, and in her daughter's hand were two thick gold bracelets. He said to her: Do you give zakat on this? She said: No. He said: Would you like Allah to adorn you with two bracelets of fire on the Day of Resurrection? She then took them off and threw them to the Prophet (peace be upon him), saying: They are for Allah, the Exalted, and His Messenger." This is in Sunan Abu Dawood 2: 95, and Sunan Al-Nasa'i Al-Kubra 2: 19, and Musnad Ishaq ibn Rahuyah 1: 177, and Musnad Ahmad 6: 455, and Al-Mu'jam Al-Kabir 24: 161, and Ibn Al-Qattan authenticated it, and Al-Nawawi said: Its chain is good. And from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) entered upon me and saw on my hand some rings made of gold, and he said: What is this, O Aisha? I said: I made them to adorn myself for you, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Do you pay their zakat? I said: No, or as Allah wills. He said: This is enough for you from the Fire." This is in Sunan Abu Dawood 2: 95, and Al-Mustadrak 1: 547, and Al-Hakim said: Its chain is authentic according to the conditions of the two shaykhs, and they did not narrate it. And from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: "I used to wear gold ornaments, and I said: O Messenger of Allah, is this hoarding? He said: What reaches the point of paying its zakat and is zakat paid on it is not hoarding." This is in Sunan Abu Dawood 2: 95, and Al-Mustadrak 1: 547, and Al-Hakim authenticated it, and Al-Mu'jam Al-Kabir 23: 281, and Allah knows best.
