The Treatment of Children Towards Their Father

Question
What does it mean to be good to a father who divorced their mother and mistreated her in front of his children? Should one take the initiative to ask about him, or is it sufficient to respond when he inquires about them?
Answer
I say, and with God's help: You must be good to him no matter what he does to you and ask about him; because we have been commanded to be good to the disbelieving parent and to treat him kindly, and it is forbidden for you to cut him off. And God knows best.
