The Wisdom Behind the Difference in Duration Between the Waiting Periods of Divorce and Death
Allah Almighty said in Surah Al-Baqarah: "And divorced women shall wait for themselves for three menstrual periods," and in another verse in the same surah, He said: "And those of you who die and leave wives behind, they (the wives) shall wait for themselves for four months and ten days." If the wisdom behind this is to ensure the purity of the womb, why is there a difference in duration? Please clarify.
Answer
I say, and with God's help: This is a matter of worship, like the number of units in prayer. It is obligatory for us to adhere to God's command in this regard; otherwise, the severance of kinship is established with one menstruation, not three. And God knows best.
