I say, and with God's success: Whoever vows to perform I'tikaf and intends non-consecutive days, it is obligatory for him to perform it consecutively; because the obligation of the servant is considered in accordance with the obligation of God Almighty, and whatever God has made obligatory consecutively, if he breaks it for a day, he must continue it: like the fasting of Dahr and killing. The generality in I'tikaf is like the explicit statement of continuity, unlike the generality in the vow of fasting. The difference between them is that I'tikaf lasts both at night and during the day, so its parts are connected, and what is connected in parts cannot be separated unless explicitly stated, unlike fasting, which does not occur at night, so it is considered separate, and what is separate in itself does not require connection unless explicitly stated.
