Question
I reside in a Western country and the cost of a grave is $15,000. I agreed with my tribe to open a bank account, and each man from the tribe contributes a certain amount each month. If a death occurs, the amount will be available. Now, if the amount in the bank reaches the threshold, is zakat due on it?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: Zakat is not due on it; because it is a condition for the obligation of zakat on wealth that the threshold must be owned by one person. This wealth, even if it reaches the threshold in form, is actually owned by several people, so there is no zakat on it. This is assuming it remains owned by these individuals, and assuming it is no longer owned by them but rather they donated it, there is still no zakat on it, and God knows best.
