Zakat on Property Owned Due to Marriage

Question
My husband gave me an apartment as my dowry, is Zakat due on it?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: If you intend to trade with it at the time of the occurrence of the cause of ownership, which is marriage, then its zakat is obligatory upon you; because marriage is considered a voluntary cause of ownership, and the conjunction of ownership with the intention of trade at the time of the occurrence of the cause of ownership is considered a reason for zakat. However, if you did not intend to trade with it at all, or you intended to trade but after the marriage, then zakat is not obligatory on it unless you sell it; because the time considered for the intention is the time of the occurrence of the cause of ownership, and God knows best.
