Question
My wife has gold exceeding 85 grams, and I thought it was not subject to zakat since it is jewelry. However, I realized a week ago that according to our school of thought, zakat is required on it. Should I pay zakat for all the previous years? And should I calculate the zakat based on the current gold price for the previous years, or according to the price for each previous year?
Answer
I say, and with God's success: The zakat threshold is equivalent to 100 grams of gold, so zakat is not obligatory on jewelry if it is less than this. It is permissible to start adhering to its zakat from now on, and previously it was not obligatory to pay zakat due to its non-obligation in other schools of thought. And God knows best.
